Only 13 of the 101 horses pre-entered for Saturday's Breeders' Cup are based overseas -- 12 from Europe and one from Japan.

Last year, 11 foreign-based horses showed up for the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita.

Blame the weather.

"We know that it's a little bit more of a recruiting challenge when we are in warm-weather venues," Breeders' Cup president D.G Van Clief said.

Also, there's just a three-week turnaround between the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe -- Europe's most prestigious race -- and the Breeders' Cup.

• Musical Chimes, owned by Sheik Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum and trained by Neil Drysdale, is still being pointed to the Mile contrary to previous reports. Drysdale and the horse are to arrive here on Wednesday.
